3.5Jamrud fort, also known as Fatehgarh, is a revered heritage monument next to Baba-i-Khyber, a historic entry to the Khyber Pass, 17 kilometers west of Peshawar. It was renamed Fatehgarh after it was constructed on a high mound from which Khyber, Mohmand, and Bara regions could be observed (the site of victory).
To fend off attacks from Afghanistan through Mohmand and from Afridi tribes attacking from the Tirah valley through the Khyber, two more forts, one at each of Bara and Shabqadar, were also built.

The fort's architecture was very similar to that of Qila Balahisar in Peshawar because of its security walls, which were intended to be six yards wide and 12 yards high and equipped with cannons to keep a close eye on any outside attackers. The settlement of Jamrud or Jamraud (Fatehgarh), in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, or NWFP for short, is where the Bab-e-Khyber (Khyber gate), erected in 1964, now sits across the street. To create a basis for further advances through the daunting gorge, Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa, a renowned and esteemed General of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Khalsa army, recommended building a sizable fort in 1837.
