Mumbai is the commercial capital of India with Arabian Sea marking its coastline. It’s a city that never sleeps; the city where people dream with eyes wide open. An interesting blend of dazzling dreams, glamour, skyscrapers, the sun and the sea give this city a distinct vibe.
It might come as a surprise to you that the creator of our beloved character Mowgli was born in Mumbai. In fact, he spent most of his life in India. He was born in a bungalow in the corner of the Sir J.J. School of Art compound 153 years ago. The mint green wooden building adorned with graceful gothic lattice work and airy rooms still stands reminiscing a past almost forgotten. Trees occupied by birds and bats lean towards the roof introducing visitors to the sense of the aura Kipling’s works often radiate.
Seeing the graffiti on the streets is one way to get to know the soul and the vibe of the city. The street art scene is Mumbai is way different from any other part of the world. You will see colorful stills from Bollywood movies and creative paintings of Bollywood actors on the walls giving you major feels of being in India’s dream city. Madhubala, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Amrish Puri and many others garnish the walls on chapel road in the old neighborhoods of Bandra.
Marine drive is the most popular promenade in the city. Escape from the busy city life and enjoy the waves crashing against the shore. Spending some quiet time at Marine Drive is a must when you’re in Mumbai. Sit on the ledge looking at the spectacular view of the sea.
Gateway of India is undoubtedly a must visit tourist spot in Mumbai. It was constructed to memorialize King George V and Queen Mary’s landing in 20th century. It was the first structure that the sailors saw while arriving in India by the Arabia Sea. Later, it marked the end and the beginning of a new era for India when the British troops left the country through the gateway.
You can see the marvelous Taj Mahal Hotel right opposite the gateway. It’s one of the greatest landmarks of Mumbai.
Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These Hindu and Buddhist caves in Elephanta Island were sculpted from basalt rock somewhere around 6th to 8th century. Take a ferry from the Gateway of India. It’s usually an hour boat ride with some fantastic views of the coastline. The caves themselves are full of beautiful ancient sculptures and are certainly worth a visit.
