The watchtower perched high above the cliffs on a peninsula with a view of the sea is one of the characteristics that defines the hilly terrain of Amalfi. This watchtower, known as the Torre Dello Ziro, was formerly a section of the Castrum Scalelle, a large castle constructed above Amalfi that functioned as a lookout point for naval raids on the Republic of Amalfi in the Middle Ages.
