Gallery 1957

Marwan Zakhem founded Gallery in 1957 on Ghana Independence Day in 2016, and it has since grown across three gallery locations in Accra. The program of Gallery 1957 is focused on fostering international collaborations between modern West African art practices and the rest of the globe. The London location of Gallery 1957 opened in October 2020 and offers an additional venue for showcasing Gallery 1957 artists from throughout Africa and the diaspora.

The Gallery 1957 program connects domestic and international audiences by featuring installations, exhibitions, and performances by the most notable artists in the area. Beyond its roster of various artists and exhibitions, international gallery alliances and the launch of the artist residency training program have welcomed many foreign artists and arts professionals to Ghana and inspired them to get more involved with the vibrant contemporary art scene in the nation.

Through a public program that includes off-site events, seminars, fairs, site-specific installation commissions, as well as the publication of publications and catalogs, Gallery 1957's activity extends beyond the gallery walls and consistently supports cultural activities in Ghana and elsewhere.

The Gallery 1957 program for 2022:

  • Gallery III of Galleria Mall - July 15th to August 20th, 2022

  • 'Two or three sides of the same Story' is a show of artwork by Nala Opiangah that was produced during her two-month residency at Gallery 1957, Accra. Nala Opiangah, a Gabonese visual artist, told universal stories in her debut exhibition, Two or Three sides of the Same Story, via the lens of her corps, the characters she created with her lavish, free-flowing, gestural brushstrokes in oil paint. The artist's body of work blurred the distinction between figuration and abstraction. The figures on display at first look resembled the bodies of Black women.

May 19th to 22nd, 2022,

Harlem Parish in New York hosted the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, in which Gallery 1957 took part for the 6th consecutive year. Lord Ohene did a solo show at the booth.

April 7th to April 10th, 2022, Gallery 1957 took part in the 24th annual Art Paris event in the Grand Palais Éphémère on the Champs de Mars in Paris. Joshua Oheneba-Takyi, Salah Elmur, Kaloki Nyamai, and Oliver Okolo all have artwork shown in the booth.
