The historic part of Lille, known as Vieux-Lille (or 'Old Lille'), is located on the city's north side. You can walk past the red brick buildings, meander through the city's winding cobblestone streets, and feel as though you've stumbled into an old Belgian neighborhood rather than a French one. This is where you'll find the true Flemish character of the city.

THINGS TO DO AT VIEUX LILLE:

Witness the charm of bygone ears as you stroll the passageways and admire structures on both sides:

The 'Vieux Lille ''s' cobblestone streets, among the city's oldest, add to the neighborhood's beauty.

You will be astounded by the 'Vieux Lille' monuments' distinctively Flemish architecture, such as that of the 'Vieille Bourse de Lille,' which is close to the 'Grand Place.' It was constructed in the 17th century for the city's merchants when Lille was still a part of Spain, and it was designated a historical monument in 1921.

You may socialize and conduct business with its booksellers and florists in the interior courtyard.

Visit monuments of national significance:

The Théâtre du Nord lived several lives before emerging as a crucial hub of culture. It began as a military office, then for almost a century served as the Saint-Nicolas Covered Market, and ultimately, until 1986, when Pierre Mauroy, the city's mayor at the time, announced the theatre project, it was known as the Roger Salengro Hall, after Lille's former mayor.

Everywhere you go, you can find excellent classic Italian food:

Ottimo! This indicates that every bite of the food is lovely. The 'Vieux Lille' is renowned for its restaurants, including the well-known Méert pastry store and its vanilla waffles as well as the renowned 'estaminets' (a type of tavern serving regional and traditional specialties). They are true institutions in the north.
