The Dodda Ganesha Temple is one of the older temples dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha. It can be found in the Basavanagudi neighborhood in the south of Bangalore city. It is widely known for its enormous monolith of Lord Ganesha, which is approximately 18 feet high and 16 feet wide.

And it is said that it is continuing to expand!

THINGS TO DO AT DODDA GANESH TEMPLE:

• Study the details of the idol and how the temple is named:

It is said that the vast Ganesha idol was divinely self-manifested, and it can be found near the well-known Nandi Temple, which houses the largest statue of Nandi anywhere in the world.

According to the folklore surrounding Doda Ganesha's name, the word 'Dodda' originates from the Kannada language and means 'big,' which is a reference to 'Big Ganesha.' This well-known temple is home to a gargantuan Ganesha that measures 18 feet in height and 16 feet across at its base.

Kempegowda I, the man credited with founding the city of Bangalore, is also credited with constructing this temple. While out for a stroll, he allegedly stumbled upon a stone with an engraved image of Lord Ganesha. After that, he instructed sculptors to carve an idol of Ganapathi out of a single block of stone.

• Attend ceremonies on holy days that are a spectacle of faith and zeal:

Throughout the festival, which lasts for a whole week, the statue of Lord Ganesh is decked out in various garbs and allowed to gorge himself on the decadent offerings.

The one known as Benne Alankara, in which the idol is covered in a staggering one hundred kilograms of butter, is by far the most fascinating. The butter does not melt, although the heat in the garbha gruha (also known as the sanctum sanctorum) is an essential characteristic of this alankara (decoration). The worshipers are then given the delicious preparation as prasad.

• Experience its enchantment for yourself:

It is said that simply seeing the temple of Vighnaharta will clear the way ahead of you of any obstacles. Consequently, going to the Dodda Ganapathi Temple, located on Bull Temple Road, is likely to be the most rewarding way to begin one's day.
