Placa Gabriel Miro

It is one of the most lovely plazas in Alicante and is famed for the 'Aguadora' water fountain situated in the heart of the plaza. This lovely, shaded plaza is close to the water and the cruise ship dock, making it the perfect location to stop by, unwind, and eat.

The square was built in the 19th century and was originally known as Plaza de Las Barcas since boats would enter and exit the city of Alicante from here (Barca means a boat in Valenciano). Finally, Gabrel Miró Ferrer, a well-known writer from Alicante in the 19th century, was chosen as its name. Gabriel was a well-known modernist author who contributed to several major newspapers in Spain and was noted for his numerous books.

Because the municipal headquarters for the national postal service, Sociedad Estatal de Correos y Telégrafos, is located on the edge of the plaza, it is also often referred to as 'Plaza de Los Correos' ('Mail square').

What to see in Plaça Gabriel Miró?

• Vicente Bauls, a local sculptor, constructed the exquisite statue known as 'Aguadora' atop the fountain in 1918. Along with some little children, the girl in the sculpture is depicted pouring water from a pitcher upon the head of a faun. It is a lovely sight to see!
• There are several fixed stone chairs in the plaza to sit back and relax.
• You will also see attractive flower beds surrounded by blue and white tiles that mimic the Mediterranean Sea's waves. You will get a sense of freshness and renewal in this setting.
• Take a stroll around the area among the enormous elm and ficus trees. The Ficus trees, which are over a century old, are protected by the Valencian Regional Government because the city of Alicante values their environmental and cultural significance.
• A limestone monument with a portrait of Gabriel Miró is located at the southern end of the plaza. It was created by the sculptor José Samper Ruiz and was unveiled in 1935.
• The Plaza de Gabriel Miró is now surrounded by a number of upscale eateries with spacious Terrazas, making it a great place to stop for a coffee and lunch during the day or dinner at night.
• It is common to see locals having an afternoon snooze on the benches surrounding the fountain due to the quiet ambiance and the large Ficus trees' ability to shield hot days' reflected heat from the Explanada.
