Mediterranean food lovers, in particular, should not pass up the chance to visit the Alicante Central Market. A stunning early 20th-century building at the end of La Rambla in Alicante is home to an authentic popular market with a wide selection of fresh and manufactured goods that are stretched out over two floors.

Without a doubt, the largest market in the city is the Central Market in Alicante. You will not find foodstuff presented in such a wide variety of appealing ways anywhere else in this lovely place. The Central Market in Alicante replaced two smaller markets that existed towards the end of the 19th century (Puerta del Mar and Garcia Calamarte).

300 stalls in this market take up nearly 11,000 square meters (commercial units). The majority of them sell meat and sausages, poultry, eggs, fruits and vegetables, fish and seafood (which are located in the bottom portion), and fish (which occupy the top part).

How to explore Mercat Central d'Alacant?

  • The best fruits from the Levantine orchards, those from the Mediterranean shore, and many other items from far-off regions are all displayed (and sold) at their stalls, with quality and variety serving as the common denominators.
  • Cafeteria Anamar is a wonderful place to grab a bite, albeit the serving size can be larger than you would want. For instance, ham and cheese on a sandwich with scrambled eggs.
  • Juanelo shop is impressive for its selection of the best pieces of regional and seasonal fish.
  • José Fuster's stall is one of the best-known in the market due to the quality of its bay fish brought by several generations of people from Alicante. The quality justifies the slightly higher pricing than those of other market vendors.
  • Juncal is a shop that is a true delight to seafood. The objects for sale are primarily from the nearby bays of Santa Pola and Villajoyosa (or Vila Joiosa).
  • Salzillo has a wide variety of coffees from various origins, exotic teas, infusions with various flavors and ingredients, and a lot of herbs and spices. This fragrance stand's specialty is all of the above.
  • Katana is a restaurant that serves fusion cuisine from Peru, Mexico, Asia, and the Middle East. Everything is based on the genius idea of the Italian Davide Bersan.
