Firming Dollar to Strengthen UAE Hotels & Tourism Sector

by Rehlat.ae posted on Jan 2nd, 2017

The US dollar strength in 2017 is expected to add further challenges for the UAE hotel and tourism sector as the Emirates becomes a more expensive destination especially to key source markets like Europe and the UK.

The US dollar has already had a good year, with its year-to-date returns against the British pound at nearly 20 per cent. With two or three interest rate hikes expected by the US Federal Reserve in 2017, the dollar is set for even more gains.

For UAE hoteliers, that will mean a change in strategy in 2017. Tourism boards have already started focusing on markets like China and India, which are showing strong demand, in order to counter the drop from Russia and Europe. Hotels are also starting to follow suit.

In the longer term, UAE Hotels should continue focusing on source markets that are less impacted by the strengthening US dollar. At the same time, hoteliers and owners will also need to look to reassess their properties’ value proposition compared to the competition in order to gain market share.

Confirmed! Two New Hotels Set to Open its Door in UAE’s RAK

by Rehlat.ae posted on December 13th, 2016

Hospitality giant Hilton Worldwide and Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts have officially confirmed its plans to open two new hotels in the UAE emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) in the coming years. The UAE Hotel Hilton Garden Inn Ras Al Khaimah will be located on the site of the former Hilton Ras Al Khaimah, which closed last January 2015 to allow a multi-million dirham refurbishment project.

The property will feature 240 guest rooms, a conference and events facility, a restaurant, lounge/bar and pool deck and is expected to open in the second quarter of 2017. Separately Mövenpick confirmed it would open its first property in the emirate at Al Marjan Island.

The 550-key resort is scheduled to open in 2019 at a prime beachfront location at the man-made project. It will include 430 rooms and suites and 120 serviced apartments. However, with UAE Hotels continues to increase its tourist traffic to RAK.
