Located on the opposite bank of the Vltava River from Prague Castle, Vyehrad is a historic fort in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction date is estimated to be about the 10th century. The Vyehrad Cemetery and the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul can be found within the fort. It has functioned as a royal house, a place of worship, and a stronghold at various stages. As a result, it's one of the most significant national cultural monuments in the Czech Republic, and it provides fantastic views of the entire city. Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument is a contributory organization of Prague's capital city, founded in 1970. 


The basic mission of this organization is the management of historical property, rehabilitation, presentation, and popularization of a unique monument, which is part of the Prague Monument Reservation and the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. The initial structure transformed into a complex that included the sovereign's opulent apartment, a church, and the chapter's meeting place. 


How to explore Vysehrad National Cultural Monument?

  • As its name translates, this 'Castle on the Heights' is home to Prague's oldest rotunda of St. Martins, dating back to the 11th century. 
  • Alfons Mucha, Bedrich Smetana, and Antonn Dvoák are among the numerous prominent Czechs buried at the expansive cemetery established in the 19th century, and is part of the complex's network of buildings. The tombstone for composer Antonn Dvoák is among the finest works by sculptor Ladislav Saloun, who is also buried in this cemetery.
  • It houses Vysehrad Gallery, which is dedicated to displaying contemporary paintings by young Czech artists. It is the right destination for all lovers of modern art.
