Duck Reach Power Station

The Duck Reach Power Station generated hydroelectric power almost continuously for about 60 years. The period ranged from 1895-1955. It was built by the Launceston Municipal Council and was the first publicly owned hydroelectric power station in the entire Australia and one of the earliest in the world.


It is in a narrowing gorge on the South Esk River which is about 4.5 km from its junction with the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania. The power station currently features beautiful sandstone buildings constructed in the Federation Free Classical style.


Today, the Duck Reach power station is one of the famous tourist attraction sites backed by its heritage listing. People can explore the surrounding area and photograph the picturesque Cataract Gorge as well.
