Many people who have the travel bug visit Ghana since it is rumored to be close to the 'center' of the planet. The Gulf of Guinea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the less visited African nations of Togo, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast all border this nation. Ivory Coast is one of the continent's most beginner-friendly countries. This coastal nation in West Africa boasts a mild climate that draws sun lovers because of its location. It has grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, savannahs, and mangroves beyond the coastlines, where wildlife can be found in plenty. Even its crowded urban centers inspire wonder.

Ghana is an excellent entry point to the continent due to its location on the edge of West Africa, diversity, lively national population, foreign community, and rapidly expanding economy. No other nation can boast as many nicknames as Ghana. Due to its significant gold reserves, it was formerly known as Africa's 'Gold Coast.' Following its liberation from British occupation, Ghana returned to its pride in the Ashanti Empire and changed its name to 'Ghana,' which means 'Warrior King' in Soninke.

Brief History of Ghana

The Ghana Empire, which formerly ruled over most of West Africa, provided inspiration for the modern-day Republic of Ghana's name. From the name of the dynasty's emperor, Ghana, the empire became known in Europe and Arabia as the Ghana Empire. After the Almoravid Commander Abu-Bakr Ibn-Umar's conquest in 1076, the empire disintegrated. And it is only around 500 AD, when the agricultural growth in central Sub-Saharan Africa was characterized that the new village settlements were established again.

The first Europeans to arrive in the country were the Portuguese. In 1471, they arrived at what would later be known as the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast got its name because it was formerly a major production center for precious metals. In 1482, the Portuguese established a permanent trading post on the western coast of what is now Ghana due to a surge in interest in trading for gold, ivory, and pepper.

It became a major trading hub between West Africa and the Mediterranean world and, by the 12th century, was home to a powerful kingdom known as the Ghana Empire. The kingdom declined in the 16th century but was replaced by the Ashanti Empire, which flourished until the 19th century when the region became a British colony. Towards the middle of the 17th century, other European merchants, primarily from the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Sweden, joined the fray. 30+ forts and castles were built along the coast by Dutch, British, and Danish merchants to safeguard their interests from other Europeans and pirates. European military construction on a scale hitherto unseen outside of Europe occurred on the Gold Coast. Ghana gained independence in 1957 and became a significant economic power in West Africa.
